Philanthropy Client
(Anonymous Fund)

As managers of a multi-million-dollar fund, we research and create nationwide grantmaking strategies across a wide range of issue areas: from reproductive health to environmental justice, alternative transportation and local foods, grassroots movement-building and strengthening organizations led by people of color. We provide full-service portfolio management, including all communications with grantees and fellow funders, grant review and due diligence, issue research and site visits to nonprofits and reporting about the impact of the work.

The Putnam Foundation

We are working with the Putnam Foundation’s Environmental Focus Committee to redesign its grant making program to help combat climate change. Work has included a national scan of funders, grantees and practitioners working to mitigate climate change to inform this family foundation’s approach. We have facilitated a mini-strategic planning process focused on where we can make the most philanthropic impact to help adapt to and mitigate the effects of climate change.

CASE STUDY

Lincoln Institute
of Land Policy

The Lincoln Institute, a nonprofit operating foundation that works around the world to improve quality of life through the effective stewardship of land, was seeking to strengthen relationships with place-based funders in the United States. We worked with Groundswell Consulting, LLC on a multi-phase research and analysis project to help the Institute advance that goal. Research included first-person interviews with funders and other partners and included a comprehensive, searchable database of potential funder relationships. Analysis resulted in a suite of recommendations for Lincoln’s work.

Regional Financial and Philanthropic Advisory Firm

(Anonymous client)

Stepping in when a longtime staff person was on extended leave, we provided tailored grant review for the philanthropic division of a private, full-service financial advisory firm that works with high-net-worth families and business clients.

We worked within the firm's established, in-house review process and committee structure, ensuring that grant review and philanthropic operations were seamless for its clients — and for the nonprofits who count on their philanthropic support.
